The Luke Kuechly High School Defensive Player of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of high school players both on and off the field in areas of leadership, sportsmanship, scholarship, and citizenship.  This year’s winner is Daevin Hobbs, a Defensive End / Tight End from Jay M. Robinson High School.

Hobbs has been a Varsity player since his sophomore year. During that year, Hobbs was All-SPC Football 1st Team (Defensive End). He had 8 sacks, 9 tackles for loss, 2 caused fumbles, and 28 total tackles (15 solo).  In his junior season, Hobbs was All-YVC Football 1st Team (Defensive End). He had 14 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 2 caused fumbles, and 39 total tackles (27 solo).  Currently, in Hobbs’s senior year through week 5, he has had 15 total tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 17 QB hurries, and 3 QB sacks. He was invited to attend the Adidas All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Daevin exhibits his leadership on and off the gridiron. Hobbs is involved in Student Council and athletic management in school and volunteers with the Special Olympics in his free time.  As a leader in Student Council, he has helped plan pep rallies, themes for home games, and developed social media posts to help advertise all the events.  In his time with the Special Olympics, he is assigned athletes and helps them with their own athletic experiences.  Hobbs also enjoys serving at a local elementary school, helping open doors, welcoming students and reading to them in class.

The Charlotte Touchdown Club and loanDepot are proud to present Daevin Hobbs with the Luke Kuechly High School Defensive Player of the Year Award.

The Award:

In 1997, the Charlotte Touchdown Club initiated the High School Defensive Player of the Year Award. This award is given annually to an area high school football player who has excelled in the four areas of our charter: Scholarship, Sportsmanship, Leadership, and Citizenship. We feel the sport of football teaches young men the very fundamentals that inspire the growth of our future leaders. The winner’s school will receive a $2,000.00 honorarium, directed to the Athletic Department, in the name of the award recipient. The recipient will be recognized for his achievement at the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Awards and will receive a certificate and trophy for his inspiration through example. The winner is chosen by a review panel selected by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. All finalists receive a certificate designating them as such for this award.

Award Criteria:

All applicants must be in their senior year of high school football and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. Five specific areas are evaluated on each applicant. These areas are:
