The Luke Kuechly High School Defensive Player of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding
accomplishments of high school players both on and off the field in areas of leadership,
sportsmanship, scholarship, and citizenship. This year’s winner is Braeden Barger, a senior
linebacker from Weddington High School.
A Varsity Team Captain for the 2024 season, Barger has contributed heavily to Weddington
Warriors’ team success over his four-year career, accumulating over 230 tackles, 40 tackles for
loss, and 8 sacks. He has also served as a three-year starter playing pivotal roles at running
back, defensive back, and kicker.
Barger has been honored as two-time All-Conference and All-County player, and a two-time
nominee for the Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was also honored as the Union
County Football Defensive Player of the Week in 2023 and was a key contributor on the 2023
4A Football State Championship team. Barger capped his football career by being selected to
participate in the Shrine Bowl. Barger also excelled at lacrosse as a two-year varsity player.
In addition to athletic excellence, Barger exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship through his
commitment to fair play and self-sacrifice for the benefit of his team. Whenever possible, Barger
willingly subs out of games, allowing younger players the opportunity to develop their skills,
prioritizing their growth over his personal stats. Barger spends countless hours watching game
film, lifting, and training. His actions reflect a deep sense of teamwork, and a desire to foster a
positive environment, making him a true role model in sportsmanship.
A leader on and off the field, Barger is active in numerous school committees and organizations.
As a four-year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has fostered a supportive
community among his peers, encouraging them to grow both athletically and spiritually. In 2023,
he served as secretary of the Warrior Gear Club, where he helped coordinate events. As a 2024
varsity team captain, Barger leads by example, motivating his teammates with his dedication,
work ethic, and positive attitude. Whether in the classroom or on the field, Barger exemplifies
the qualities of a true leader, empowering those around him to strive for excellence and
maintain a strong sense of camaraderie.
Barger also contributes to community life through his extensive involvement in community
service and volunteer work. He actively volunteers at Antioch Elementary School, where he
supports students and contributes to their education experiences. Barger participates in the Tim
Tebow Second Chance Joy Prom and is involved with One7 Ministries.
Barger’s strong work ethic is illustrated by his employment at AutoBell Car Wash and Tropical
Smoothie Café, where he balances his work responsibilities with his academic and athletic
commitments. Barger has also recently started a lawn care business which not only reflects his
entrepreneurial spirit but also underscores his dedication to contributing positively to the
community.
The Charlotte Touchdown Club and Red Clay Industries are proud to present Braeden Barger
with the Luke Kuechly High School Defensive Player of the Year Award.
