AKRON’S DAVIS IS BRONKO NAGURSKI NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (FWAA) – Free safety Alvin Davis Jr. punctuated Akron’s comeback win Saturday with two interception returns for touchdowns – both in the second half – as the Zips scored their first win over a Big Ten program in more than a century, toppling Northwestern on the road, 39-34. Davis’ highlight returns of 97 and 50 yards earned him the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Sept. 15, as selected by the Football Writers Association on America.

The 5-9, 175-pound junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., turned his first interception into a 97-yard scoring return – the second-longest in program history – that brought Akron to within 21-19 late in the third quarter. The second pick and 50-yard scoring return pushed the Zips’ lead to 39-28 with 7:24 left, one of three defensive touchdowns in the second half for Akron, which is 2-0 for the first time since 1993 (25 seasons). Davis also had 10 tackles.

It was the first multi-interception game for Davis, who has started 21 of 28 career games at Akron. He is listed as a cornerback but has started both games at free safety and has come up with an interception in each. Davis is tied for third on the team with 13 tackles, his three interceptions lead the Zips, he has a forced fumble and a pass break-up, and he is now tied for second on the team in scoring with 12 points.

The dramatic scoring plays sparked Akron’s first win over a Big Ten team since 1894 (12-6 over Ohio State). Akron travels to Iowa State (0-2) on Saturday.

Davis will be added to this season’s Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. Each Tuesday during the regular season, the FWAA has selected a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since 2001. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Wed., Nov. 14. The winner will be chosen from those five finalists who are part of the 2018 FWAA All-America Team.

The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association’s entire membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. The committee members then select the winner as the best defensive player in college football.

The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet, presented by ACN, will be held on Mon., Dec. 3 at the Charlotte Convention Center. In addition to the 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner’s announcement, the banquet will also celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, sponsored by the Rolle Oral & Facial Surgery.

The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Visit ncfaa.org to learn more about our story.
