AIR FORCE ACADEMY’S KYLE JOHNSON

Bio: Kyle Johnson, a Senior Inside Linebacker for the United States Air Force Academy, is from Jacksonville, FL. He is the son of Brian and Cindy Johnson, and is majoring in Management with a minor in Spanish. Johnson has been a true leader on and off of the football field. He has completed a language immersion program in Chile, Operations Air Force where he was the Cadet-In-Charge, survival training as cadet leadership member, a summer research project, and was on the cadet leadership cadre last summer. Kyle has also been recognized for being on the Superintendent’s List five separate semesters, Dean’s A-Team twice, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma management honor society, attending the Gettysburg Leadership Symposium, and a finalist for the CoSIDA Academic All-American award.

Stats: 2018: Johnson played in ten games, starting nine … named first-team academic all-district … second on the team in tackles with seventy, second in tackles for loss with seven and a half … also had an interception and pass breakup … named second-team all-Colorado by the National Football Foundation, Colorado Chapter last season … earned first-team academic all-Colorado by the National Football Foundation.
2017: Johnson played in all 12 games … recorded five total tackles, including two unassisted … season-best two tackles vs. VMI … matched his season high with two tackles vs. UNLV … also blocked the first kick of his career, blocking a punt vs. the Rebels … one tackle vs. Utah State.

 

In High School, Johnson Lettered four years in football and lacrosse … first-team all-state honors and second-team all-first-coast honors as a junior in football … first-team all-state and all-first coast in football as a senior … earned first-team all-area honors in lacrosse as a senior…high school football coach was Charles “Corky” Rogers … had an interception return for a touchdown to help his team earn a spot in the state finals in football … played on same football team as AF teammate Jordan Jackson.

The recipient of the Defender of the Nation Award will be announced on November 7th from one of the Nation’s (9) military academies and institutions including Air Force Academy, The Citadel, Coast Guard Academy, Naval Academy, Norwich University, Texas A&M University, Virginia Tech, VMI and West Point and is based on exceptional leadership qualities on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The recipient must also exhibit a high standard of integrity by leading through example.

In conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America, the 2019 Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet will be held on Monday, December 9th at the Charlotte Convention Center.  In addition to honoring the Defender of the Nation Award winner, the banquet will celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Legends Award.  UCLA’s Jerry Robinson, a College Football Hall of Famer will be honored as the 2019 Legends Award recipient and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is slated as the keynote speaker.
