CHARLOTTE TOUCHDOWN CLUB ANNOUNCES MICHAEL A. KAHN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENT & POP WARNER LITTLE PANTHERS TEAM OF THE YEAR

2017 POP WARNER LITTLE PANTHERS’ DEFENSIVE/SCHOLASTIC TEAM OF THE YEAR: Sponsored by Publix Super Markets

CHARLOTTE, NC (November 9th, 2017) – The Charlotte Touchdown Club announced today two awards for presentation at this year’s Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on December 4th.

Porter Ridge High School’s JAKE HORSTKAMP was named the recipient of the 2017 Michael A. Kahn $40,000 Community Service/Scholastic Scholarship Award courtesy of the Michael A. Kahn Family Foundation.

This prestigious award is presented to a high school senior scholar-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of community stewardship, academic excellence, and accomplishment on the football field.  Jake Horstkamp has demonstrated a commitment to the classroom, community, and athletics and will receive a $40,000 scholarship provided in $10,000 annual grants upon his continuation of community service and academic achievement in college.

“Jake embodies what the scholarship is all about,” said Michael A Kahn. “Not only is he an outstanding athlete, he is outstanding in the classroom as well. Further, he is involved in making his community a better place for all that live there. Jake checks all three boxes, athletics, academics & community and it is an honor to have him selected as this year’s winner.”

COUL-OAK STEELERS Jr. Pee Wee Team was named the Pop Warner Little Panthers Defensive/Scholastic Team of the Year sponsored by Publix Super Markets.

Pop Warner Little Scholars is an international program that operates for the benefit of its youth participants. Since 1929, the program’s philosophy has been:  Academics and Athletics go hand-in-hand. The program stresses lessons of value far beyond the playing or spirit days of the boys and girls involved, such as; self-discipline, teamwork, concentration, friendship, leadership, and good sportsmanship.  With such goals in mind, and by providing an opportunity to participate in an organized, supervised environment with emphasis on maximum safety and participation, Pop Warner offers young men and women a unique and memorable experience.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which was founded in 1997 as a coalition of the major collegiate football awards to protect, preserve and enhance the integrity, influence, and prestige of the game’s predominant awards. The NCFAA encourages professionalism and the highest standards for the administration of its member awards and the selection of their candidates and recipients. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is presented annually by the Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s most outstanding NCAA Division I defensive football player at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, NC.  All proceeds benefit the Charlotte Touchdown Club Scholarship Fund.
